Reduce stress by being assertive.

Assertion sometimes has a negative stigma attached to it. Oftentimes, people will think that being too assertive will make others view them as wicked, mean or selfish. People want to be liked and would rather avoid confrontation than say something that would solve a potential problem. But telling people your honest opinion, what you want and what is on your mind will not make people dislike you. Rather, they will respect you because you can stand up for yourself and communicate effectively.

How can you become more assertive? It takes confidence. Communicate confidently by making direct eye contact and position yourself in a comfortable manner as you speak.

If you value yourself, you will stand up for your rights and wants. When you learn how to express your feelings, opinions and needs, you can’t be taken advantage of. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, to make mistakes or say “no.” If you are passive about your needs, social discomfort may be averted, but no one will know how you truly feel and you will ultimately pay the price of stress. If you are straightforward and real, it can only benefit you in the long run.
